Re: Encounters with stupidity

I came here to share this because I am so boggled by this guy's obliviousness. He's someone I've known for a long time, and my affection for him tends to come and go. I call him Douchetard, as he has tendencies to be a douchebag (and doesn't even realize it, ha!) and often does and says things that are incredibly stupid.

So, he wants to join the private Aion server that I started playing on, and of course, he needs help.

Zira says: did you replace the bin32 folder?
Douchetard says: Hmm not yet
Zira says: ok, you gotta do that, follow their instructions
Douchetard says: Alright. Their instructions doesnt really specify replacing the Bin32 folder
Zira says: well, that's what they mean. download the file they provide, unzip it, then move it into the game folder

This is the exact text on the site in regards to the subject:
As of Dec 27th, InfiniteAION currently supports 1.5.1.4/1.5.1.5. If you are running a later version such as 1.5.1.7 or something higher, you will need to replace your bin32 folder in your AION directory with the one provided here [link].

Yeah, it's not that hard if you can READ. I have a feeling he hasn't even bothered to look at the connect page on the website. I wonder if he's even looked beyond the front page.

Then, later on, he decided to reinstall the game. He played the beta of Aion awhile back and still had it installed, but it was giving him errors, so he decided that a fresh install would be better. So, he started downloading and installing from the web.

Douchetard says: Yeah, 81/6994mb done
Douchetard says: Whelp, looks like I gotta keep myself occupied
Douchetard says: I might actually open the real Aion I bought awhile back
Douchetard says: Soundtrack and a cool figure inside of it
Zira says: wait, you bought it?
Douchetard says: Yeah, got really into it during the beta
Zira says: then install from the CD and update XD
Douchetard says: lol ah

Seriously, WTF? You have a HARD copy and you're spending extra time and bandwidth DOWNLOADING it. Ugh, retard.

Also, he was IMing me over his phone earlier because he was excited to get in game. He said that I could make him an account and some characters since he thought I'd do a better of job of getting them to look right with Aion's extensive customization. So, I hopped right to it, because making characters is fun! XD

In the process, I told him,
  • Oh darn, you need to activate your account through email.
  • Oh wait, never mind! It works!
  • The name Talen is taken, do you mind if I use his father's name, Talanvor? (to which he responded, "yeah that's fine")
  • (he said he wanted to make a cleric, so I said he could use one of my usual RP cleric concepts) Ok, I'm making N'shara for you.

So, after all those clues, he said when he got him that he didn't even know if I made the account or what characters were on it. *facepalm*

lol...some people are just dumb with computers. I dunno what it is. Just like anything else, the younger you are when you start using the things and get familiar with how they work, the better off you'll be. Learning something completely new as an adult can be incredibly difficult.

My dad has gotten to the "If I click this thing on the thing twice, this thing pops up that shows me the lottery drawings". Hearing him click the mouse is pretty amusing, it's like CLANK....CLANK.

He's a year younger than me though. XD He's not terribly inexperienced with computers, but he's just not bothering to pay attention. 90% of that could be avoided if he'd just read the information in front of his face.

Yeah, that's a lot of what I don't understand about people, most of their problems could be resolved by just reading the stuff on the screen. Just seems they'd rather not figure it out themselves. How lazy can you be?

Some people don't have reading comprehension, I dunno. It's weird. If you tell them the exact same thing that is written, then understand it. But if it's just written in a formal instruction manual kind of way, then they can't understand it.

Ha, maybe. He's always been pretty daft when it comes to written stuff, but he still aspires to be a writer. His role-playing is sad though. He always ends up re-using words and phrases that I said, and I pretty much have to think for his characters if an option for a reaction isn't obvious in big neon letters. Basically, if he has to put thought into it, he needs help.

Then, he has a tendency to act like he knows what I'm talking about when I mention someone or something he doesn't actually know. Sometimes I test him with a really obscure concept and he's just "Ah, yeah." when he should be like "uh... what?"

The instructions on the site weren't that hard though, just a few sentences getting the basics out. I have a feeling he didn't even look at the connect tab on the site for the longest time.

This post is from sort of a friend of a friend. I don't know this person, but the story is really troubling.

Dumb guy from before sent me an email, added me to one of his email lists accidentally apparently.
The e-mail trail below is my latest attempt for you all to part in the PG deck across from Duke South Clinic and the reason you can not from Melissa Harden Assistant Director of Parking.

I pull out all my stop and call in all my marker but I still can not get you into the deck across from Clinic.

Thank you
