Places you want to visit someday?

Postby remify on Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:07 pm

Besides Japan. Yeah. This thread is about any vacation spot, country, event or anything of the sort that you want to see at some point. Realistic or not, where do you want to go?

There are actually a few things I want to see and do in the States. Have any of you been to Yellowstone? Not only am I really interested in seeing all of the beautiful land up there, what with the waterfalls, mountains, geysers and whatnot...there's something else there that I had no idea existed. I want to see this for myself:

Article about it:

...because it doesn't look like it should exist. I thought this was actually a painting, fake picture or something at first. The thing looks like a portal to another dimension or something. Apparently, the color of the edge is caused by bacteria in the microbial mats that, depending on the season, change colors from orange and red to dark green. It's no puddle either apparently, being 300 ft in diameter. I'm not even sure if I could take in very much of the spectacle by standing near it in person. Looks like there's some kind of bridge along the side of it for visitors. Judging from pictures, it apparently changes more than colors depending on the activity of the bacteria, I suppose.

And I just happened upon this on the Internet a while back. You'd think something as interesting as this (well, interesting to me anyway) would be more popular. Everyone's heard of Old Faithful, the enormous geyser there, but not this thing.

Remy, I bet if you go out to that spring it's unbearably hot, but I have no idea. Might affect its popularity though if my guess is right, haha.

I've also wanted to go to some natural places in the US like the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone Park. When I was little, I always wanted to go to Alaska to see snow, lol.

I would like to go to several places in Europe to see their historical structures (castles and cathedrals=awesome) and famous art museums.

Some tropical island type place with pretty blue water. Our water is kinda greyish (and at the moment it's oily, too).

Some of the pictures I've seen of this thing show a bridge around the edge that people walk on. Like here: http://photography.nationalgeographic.c ... image.html

I don't think the temperature surrounding it would be unbearable, but the water? LOOOOOOL DEFINITELY. It's really cool up there in the not-summer months too, so a slightly higher temperature would probably be welcome if it were even the case. I can't see this thing heating the atmosphere significantly up from the usual 40/50s of when I'd be going.

I've seen the water usually measured at 160-180 F. Not going to try to swim around in it obviously, but observing from a safe distance should be fine!

Otherwise, castles and cathedrals are yes. This is particularly amplified when I listen to something like Blackmore's Night or eh, power metal lol. The deep green of the hills, old castles, etc...they're spread out all across Europe and I don't exactly know where I'd want to go to see things like that, but probably the UK. The Royal Armories in Leeds has a lot of the swords that the current market reproduces, though there's several others across everywhere. There's also the Wallace Collection in London...

I think I've known this for a while, but Louisville, KY actually has a subsidiary of the Royal Armories in the history museum there. Maybe we could check that out one day?

I went to Yellowstone about a decade ago.

The Grand Prismatic Spring is far more grand from a bird's eye view though, haha. You have to think what it would look like from upclose. While you can certainly see some of the colour contrast, it's not quite as striking from ground level. The water is a bit cooler beside the boardwalks, I've stuck my hand into it and it wasn't flesh-eating boiling hot.

I was kinda annoyed at Old Faithful as it happened on a not quite so clear day, so it wasn't as beautiful as it could of been. I need to go back with a digital camera so I can take 1000+ pictures instead of 4 rolls of 24. >.<

I need to find that album...

Yeah, that's about what Ithought...it's why I mentioned I wasn't sure I'd be able to take much of it in standing there in person. It's a few hundred feet in diameter, so yeah...I've always wanted to do a hiking/sightseeing type thing in a naturally beautiful place like that though.

Aside from the museum in Louisville there's also there's a castle in Versailles KY.

Here's some history on it if you're bored http://www.dupontcastle.com/castles/martin.htm

After it was renovated it got turned into a hotel the tennis court kinda kills the mood here's the main website http://www.thecastlepost.com/

KY also has Mammoth Cave which is the longest known cave system. I've been there it's fuxing huge.

As for places I'd like to go aside from Japan. Probably anywhere that's not America. Anywhere in Europe or Asia would be interesting to me. Aside from seeing the typical touristy spots I want to try different foods.

Ooh, that's another thing. Cave exploring, finding gemstones, etc. I could do that in NC though lol.

http://www.emeraldvillage.com/default.htm

Apparently NC has the two largest emerald mines in the US. Heh this is kinda something a kid would do, but I never got to do it as a kid so... =/ there's plenty of mountain area in my state, but I've never ventured too far from the coast.

My folks never took me to like, Disney World or an amusement park or anything like that either. I guess I have a lot to do.

We also have the largest home in the United States, which may as well be a castle:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biltmore_Estate

Always kinda wanted to go there too. 175,000 square feet, 250 rooms...what's more, the land there was originally 125,000 acres. The guy's widow sold it later and now it's -just- 8000 lol. What the shit would you do with 125,000 acres of land?
